Sea Lions Swim Team

The Sea Lions are the Scottish Hills summer swim team. This is a recreation team for our pool members that focuses on skill development and fun for the children! Summer swim is truly a family event because while the kids are in the pool, parents are volunteering their time to make sure the meets run smoothly. Most meets even have a parent vs coach race!

Listed below are many of our Frequently Asked Questions. If you still have questions, please contact the swim coordinators at

SHRC Swim Team FAQs

Do we need to belong to Scottish Hills Recreational Club to participate on swim team?

Yes, swim team is only open to club members.  Membership information can be found here.

Do swimmers need to have swimming experience?

No swimming experience is required to participate on the swim team, but swimmers (for safety reasons) must be able to swim, unaided, their competition distance by Time Trials (the first Tuesday of June). Competition distance = 15 yards for swimmers ages 6 & under, 25 yards for swimmers ages 7-10, and 50 yards for swimmers ages 11 and up.  Please note that this does not mean swimmers need to be proficient in the strokes, just be able to safely be in the water for that distance.

When are practices?

Practices start mid to late May (specific date TBA) and are offered in the afternoons and in the mornings (morning practices begin after the traditional calendar schools are out).  Swimmers are asked to attend at least 3 practices per week (any days/times) and all practices are open to all ages.

When are meets?

Time Trials will be held on Tuesday, June 5, then dual-team meets are held Tuesday nights from June 12 through July 17.  Meet start time is 6 pm, with swimmers asked to arrive for warm-ups at either 5:00 (home meets) or 5:30 (away meets).

What is the cost to participate?

Swim team dues are TBA for the season, which covers practices, meets, regular team activities, etc.  Dues are discounted for additional swimmers in a family.  Team suits can be purchased for an additional cost – they are ordered and purchased through a local swim supply store.  Team suits aren’t required but most swimmers do purchase them.

What other benefits are there to joining the team?

Our focus is building an environment of fun, friendship, and sportsmanship for everyone involved.  We have lots of activities for swim team throughout the season, including Tuesday morning crafts/activities, game nights with coaches, and Monday night pot luck dinners at the pool for swimmers and families.   Swim team is a great way for kids and families to build friendships that will last long after the summer ends!

Parent volunteers are needed to help run the meets.  Each family is asked to volunteer for 4 shifts during the season – shifts are in advance of the meet, the first half, the second half or clean-up at the end. Even if you are new to the team, there are easy ways you can help.  The coordinators will meet with new parents to explain everything, and the Time Trial is like a mock meet where we can learn any of the positions.

We always need Stroke & Turn Judges – the one volunteer position where a class is required.  If you are interested, please let the coordinators know so they can forward class information to you.
